A *culture is not optional project
In 2009, *culture is not optional raised $25,000 in forty days to purchase the historic Huss School property in Three Rivers, Michigan. To take the Huss Project into the future, our next goal is to raise $50,000 by June 15, 2013 and $100,000 by December 31, 2013. The Brick Campaign offers a structure to help us meet our goal of raising $100,000: we seek to sell 1,000 “bricks” for $100 each.
Gifts from the campaign will be designated as follows:
- Approximately $50,000: Pay off the balance of our mortgage, which is owed in a land contract agreement with the former owner. The deadline for our balloon payment is June 15.
- $8,000: Fund a complete architectural analysis of the building, which will include initial drawings and cost estimates for renovating the plumbing, heating and electrical systems which are necessary to begin applying for grants.
- Remaining balance: Begin infrastructure improvements, with the goal of having at least one room up and running for year-round use by the end of 2013.
The overarching goal for how the campaign money will be spent is to build capacity. Paying off the mortgage frees up approximately $500 per month for infrastructure and programming. An architectural analysis allows us to pursue grants. Creating a usable space increases our capacity for programming and rental income.
